The christology and ecclesiology of Vatican II should continue by a new study and devotion of the Holy Spirit. This was recomanded by the Pope Paul VI. John Paul II has also said this words in the encyclical Dominum et Vivificantem.
This work aims to be one of the many responds to this challenge. The problem of the discernment of spirits is even the problem of the practical theology of the openness to the Holy Spirit. Although there occurs a danger of failures by the discernment, Christian must learn to discern spirits. This is the only way how to live in Spirit; and the life in Spirit is the only possible way of the Christian’s life.
The aim of this work is to comment the Ignatius’ well known rules for the discernment of spirits and to show their actuality and freshness for modern people. In the area of the discernment Ignatius pays for a person with a high authority. Although we find in his rules only ideas dispersed in the whole Christian tradition, however the order, in to which he had fit them allows us to say that no man before Ignatius gave such a file of practical rules and no man after him detected similar rules which could replace the rules of him.
Ignatius’ rules are not dedicated to everybody. The rules of the first week of the Spiritual Exercises are dedicated to those who are on the way of purification – via purgativa, who are confronted by the challenge to open themselves radically to the Lord. While one is on this way of purification and has big difficulties with the temptations to be worry about an earthly honour and so on, it is not a good time to explain him the rules of the second week, because they could be harmful for him. From this follows that also this work is not dedicated to everybody. Only the first preparation part and the rules of the first week are for everyone. The whole work – especially the rules of the second week – is dedicated to the person, who emphasises no more the selfconsciousness and the purification, but the cognition of God in Jesus Christ.
We are not attempting to compile a systematic theology of the discernment and even an exhaustive analysis of the Ignatius’ rules. In the short first chapter we underline the need of the discernment – if a man would act according to all impulses without any discernment, he would annihilate himself. In the second chapter we explain the nature and the evolution of the discernment. The discernment has to be done not only in the serious things and only during the retreat, but all the time and in all the situations. It may become so habitual and so spontaneous as the balancing by walking. The question whether my acting harmonises with Christ is the core of the life of an adult Christian. The distinctive signs of a good angel are: gentleness, subtlety, modesty, calmness. The evil angel is in contrary nervous, irascible, rash, foolish.
The third chapter contains the necessary suppositions for right discernment: the right projection of God as a Father of adolescents. It is not the man who has difficulties to come in contact with God, but it is God who has to pay, who has to sacrifice his life if he wants to have a close relationship with a man. The wrong imagination of God makes the discernment impossible. The other suppositions are: the anxiety to fulfil Gods will, the openness to God, knowledge of God, canniness. After such a preparation in the fourth chapter we come to the rules of Ignatius: how they became known by him, which is their importance, how should they be rank and characterised. After having commented the introduction to the rules we speak shortly about their utility also for those, who are not accustomed to hear about the work of good and evil angels.
The fifth chapter contains a lengthy commentary to the first and second rule – the types of persons. In the sixth chapter we explain the meaning of the basic Ignatius’ terms: consolation and nonconsolation. The right applying of the rules assumes the right understanding of this term. In the seventh chapter there is a commentary to the Ignatius’ advice for the time of nonconsolation. In the eighth chapter the more fine discernment starts: the discovering of the deception of the evil spirit given by him under the garment of the spiritual consolation. Here is shown how important is to reflect our own experiences of peace as the signs of the good angel. In the last chapter we indicate some modern accesses. They are deeply rooted in Bible, which should become the soul of the whole theology. In conclusion we express our joy, that the number of people interested in discernment increases, because it occurs in the times when Christians become more involved in the sprading of the Kingdom of God. |
