Analysis of the Religiosity of Catholics in Slovakia: the Findings of the Sociological Research The Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of Trnava University and the Divinity Faculty of Trnava University have established interdisciplinary research team, consisting of scholars from the fields of sociology and theology. The team has examined the main characteristics and dimensions of Catholic religiosity in Slovakia. The research was based on a representative sample of 2020 respondents from inhabitants of Slovakia from eighteen to sixty years of age. The most important results of this investigation are presented in this book. The majority of the presented findings are concerned with the group of 1298 respondents, claiming their affiliation to the Catholic Church. The data, characteristic of the groups with other religious affiliations were also elaborated. The book is divided into the seven chapters. The general orientation of the research, its goals, methods and contents are explained in the first chapter. In the second chapter are discussed the major theoretical and methodological approaches to the evaluation of the religiosity. Four dimensions of Catholic religiosity in Slovakia are analyzed: ritualistic, ideological, experiential and intellectual dimensions. The third chapter examines commitment of Catholics in Slovakia to their parish communities. Considered are the data related to believers’ awareness or sense of belonging to a parish community, to the level of being informed about activities organized in the parish, and to the contacts between parishioners and their parish priests. The fourth chapter describes the ethical consequences of religiosity in public life. Attitudes of inhabitants towards the promotion of Christian standpoints on the political scene are analyzed. The fifth chapter presents the data showing how the obligation to rest and to refrain from work on Sunday is accepted among Catholics in Slovakia. The sixth chapter analyzes relationship between religiosity and attitudes toward a life-long marriage, cohabitation, sexual contacts of teenagers, extra-marital sexual relations of married people, and toward various methods of birth control. The relation between religiosity and expected fertility is discussed. The data on religious socialization are also considered. The seventh chapter speaks of certain manifestations of the non-Christian religiosity (e.g. occultism, augury, spiritism, UFO, etc.) being tolerated among inhabitants of Slovakia.
