In the year 1975, as the author began his general practice, he noticed among his patients, mostly elderly people, two basic groups. In the first were those who, in spite of their old age, were filled with optimism and vitality. In the other group were those searching for a doctor, not only for treatment itself, but also out of desire to meet another with whom they might share their problems, especially those rooted in loneliness. In their eyes one could often see the question: Does life still make some sense? His entry into the Jesuit order dates from this time. Among the Jesuits he has had the opportunity to see another face of aging. His brothers, who were entering the third age of their life, knew how to live their age with so much dignity that they have become great spiritual assets for all. This reality, together with some pastoral and pedagogical experiences, has motivated him to choose the topic of this paper. The study is divided into five chapters. At the beginning the author introduces the human being from the viewpoint of biblical-theological anthropology. The initial point of searching for the roots of human dignity is the statement in the story of creation in the Book of Genesis: Man has been created. We learn from the narrative not only about God creating man in his image, but also about man deforming this image within him by sin. Therefore the act of creation points out not only the roots of man’s dignity but also points to the first attack on that dignity. The chapter closes presenting the realization of God’s image in the ultimate situations of age, disease and death. The second chapter describes aged, diseased and dying people as human beings living among us and presents them from various points of view. The first are medical considerations and related basic ethical principles. Then follows the social dimension in the family surrounding, civil society and church community. Pain is an inseparable part of life. Man in pain undergoes at first the experience of his own vulnerability and becomes aware of his finiteness. Therefore the following two chapters, the third and the fourth, deal with the questions of pain, suffering, dying and death – viewed as natural experiences, and, as well, viewed through faith. It has been pointed out that both pain and death belong to the natural order of human existence. Generally, human beings strive against pain until the moment when every struggle becomes useless. That is the moment of death. Therefore man must confront his attitudes towards his own mortality. Either he tries to escape or deny death, or he accepts it as the peak of life, as its climax, which leads to immortality. And so, both pain and death have been given a creative nature, principally by participation in Christ’s work of redemption. Christ’s death has fashioned from death itself the highest act of love. The author felt it necessary to include in this chapter also a subsection about the challenges facing aged, diseased or dying people. Euthanasia, disthanasia and other forms of danger are treated in the context of the fourth chapter that follows this major idea: man looses his dignity neither by age nor by disease, because he may choose to live these stages of life in a very dignified way. The fifth and final chapter is named ”Care for the aged, diseased and dying”. This is a consideration for each of us. In the subsections we deal with the duties of family, civil society and the church community. Appropriate care needs to have somatic, psychic, social and spiritual dimensions. These people in spite of their age or disease are special and at the same time remain fully human. Stating the uniqueness of each human being, and recognizing the reality that every man is also one among many fellows, we come to appreciate that man is a being in the midst of community. This value of the human person is the fundamental principle of every inter-personal relationship, and this realization is at the essence of sociability. The existence of every human being also has its own universal quality. Directly from this fact comes universal natural law, imbedded by the Creator into the core of creation, the human being. The human person is such a gifted creature that the only adequate relation towards him is love, and this is true in our relations and attitudes towards the aged, the diseased and the dying. In addition to this basic idea, the author has determined in the study to address for the reader any caricatured concepts which might present aged and diseased people as victims of a regressive generation. He has sought to identify and outline the richness and wisdom of old age and the possibilities of man’s development by pain. All this follows from the reality that man as a person has been created by God. So, if we want to speak about the dignity of man in his old age, disease and death; if we don’t want to limit the value of human life only to the span of youth and health; if we want to value life according to membership in family and society; if we don’t want to diminish man to an object of management: then we must build his value on something higher than just the reference to the human race, and that is God.
