In the beginning of this work author asks himself: Is in after council’s catechisms in Slovakia taken into account the problem of liturgical year? In what degree the catechism handbooks used at Elementary schools fulfil the liturgical-catechistic request of the Church after the Second Vatican Council?
The method used in this work has requested to work with liturgical-catechetic materials: researching these materials, doing analyses, systemising, comparing and evaluating. The main idea of this work was to give at first, an overlook at the liturgical year before and after the Vatican Council II. And also to find clear postulates and recommendations that would indicate the meaning of the liturgical year and its exercitation in catechising, to systemise them and then to compare them with what we can find on this topic in Slovak catechisms. The conclusion gives a final evaluation. Thus first and second chapter is more theoretic and the third is practical.
The first chapter includes a short look at the liturgy in the twentieth century, especially in the eyes of Vatican Council II. It clearly shows great values of liturgical course of events in the life of a Christian.
The second chapter moves the accent from theological-liturgical discourse to the field of catechisation and a possible “use” of church year material. The author has utilised mostly catechetical-pastoral documents of the Church and opinions of some well known theologians. Thus he showed even urgent need for putting together the liturgical year and catechesis.
The purpose of analysing and systemising materials, taken from the first two chapters, was to point out at many realities which would answer following questions:
Why is it important in catechesis to take into account events of the liturgical year?
What is the message of a liturgical year alone?
What are the purposes and tasks of liturgical year in catechesis?
How to reason existentially the need of a Christian for liturgical year?
How to bring in this material to the religion classes at schools?
The author was following the line in which was more and more important to show the understanding of liturgical year as an every-day need for Christian, not just as a matter to inform those who are being catechised. Thus once this liturgical year encounters lives of Christians, it can fulfil their basic spiritual and existential desires and needs.
The third chapter of this work was very practical. The author set up a purpose to re-evaluate catechism materials which have been edited gradually after the council in Slovakia, including temporal catechistical program and its handbooks (until 2000).
Interestingly enough was an evaluation of catechetical materials after 1990 when more and more Slovak catechism has been abandoned. In this time, new series of catechism in particular dioceses have been issued. We could have come to such conclusions from studying, examining and comparing these materials.
Generally, we can say that the material and “quality” of the Church liturgical year have been presented in Slovak conditions in the period after the Vatican Council II (until 1990) more in a static and a objective way. The reason laid mainly in a problem that no student books for religion classes have been elaborated until then, not even the schedule for Elementary schools. The living of liturgical periods and feasts in catechesis and explaining their theological setting laid upon a good will of religion teacher. It could only be done in a certain way of occasional catechisation. One catechism should comprise all of faith compendium and morals. It was also a disadvantage, this more or less dogmatic summary has lead to a temptation to catechise children and youth only in form of questions and answers. And then liturgical year seemed to be less fundamental material, often presented in the end of a student book, as it was just the supplement to that student book.
The situation in the beginning of nineties has meant a great progress in catechising of Slovakia. New series of catechism have been issued in some dioceses. These have proceeded according to the life of Church with liturgical year in the first classes of Elementary school. Adjusting a year schedule with liturgical year seemed to be very often a problem. We have pointed out at the details of this problem in particular series.
Generally, we can say that certain gradation was missing in younger classes, particularly when you consider the depth of presenting liturgical year theology; in other chapters were not so clear hierarchical organisation of liturgical periods and feasts; somewhere was not sufficiently highlighted conscious and active participation in liturgy.
The richness of missions and purposes of liturgical year which we have pointed out in the second chapter have been also often presented from different reasons in very limited way. The most discussed themes in catechisms represented Holy mass, prayer, and all what is necessary to do in certain liturgical periods. The weakness of such approach consists of little emphasis in some of these aspects on symbol understanding and paschal mystery, on God’s acting in present liturgical moment, on many exemplars of sanctity, on joyful community celebration, on hope and eschatology, which is included in liturgical year.
While considering the present Slovak series of catechism, according to the author, younger classes asks for a stronger bond between the catechism and the liturgical year. Then, in some of the older classes would be good if the liturgical life of a Christian during the year is more highlighted. In this set has been often discussed the Eucharist and her celebration but sometimes was missing something inspiring which would allow to celebrate the Eucharist deeply devoted, something more personal – experiencing. Examples of saints which memorials and feasts are celebrated in Church during the year, were used too little.
This work aims to evaluate what is being done in catechisation in Slovakia; again it was pointed out at certain ways how to express better linking between the liturgical year and the teaching of religion classes. All this material may serve as a base for further studies and writing seminars or as practical motives for preparing new schedules and catechisms.
It results from this work that the liturgical year has in catechistical process its essential place. The liturgical year leads a man to get to know better the history of salvation but also may serve as an educational tool to deepen prayer and sacramental life. This practically means how to get closer to others in communities and in Christian families on the way to experience unification of a man with Christ who with all the saints enters the history in mysterious way.
This work may be a good help for catechists and for those who would like to entertain more with liturgical year. Liturgical year offers to deepen your love and gives you a chance to use everything what the Church as a mysterious body of Christ already so many centuries offers. This only serves for a more beautiful life, for saving of all people and each person especially. |
